Fruin House and Shop - Aptos, California

(currently under construction)

contractor: Terry Byers Construction - Santa Cruz, California

Exterior, concrete stairs connect the lower (work) terrace level to the upper (living) terrace level.

View of the saw-tooth roof of the shop during construction. The exterior siding and roofing is galvanized, corrugated metal.

View of shop from entry road during construction.

View from upper terrace of phase I living area and saw-tooth shop building, beyond.  Future house construction will rise above the flat, temporary roof to the right.

The Koshino House by Tadao Ando features a mysterious and sculptural set of exterior stairs which makes an almost ceremonial (and not largely functional) connection between the upper and lower landscape levels.  Functional circulation between the sleeping area and the living area is perfunctorily via a dark, underground hallway underneath the exterior circulation sequence. This precedent was important in resolving the site layout of the Fruin project.

Study of full built-out of main house with exterior staircase. Wrap-around and deep sunshades protect the extensive south-facing glazing from solar heat gain. (Note: the shop building is not shown in this rendering.)

Rendering of saw-tooth shop in foreground with main house behind. This project, more than any other in my portfolio, contrasts most strongly the two opposing strains of my work. The first type is the anonymous, vernacular out-building, in this case with corrugated metal siding.  And the second type is the more abstract, stucco contemporary design.

View from entry drive at main living area balcony. The house faces South and the main property views to the right.

Roof Plan - There is a roof deck with access via an exterior stair.

Second Floor Plan - This level has bedrooms, bath and closets in the rear. Across a roof deck is a mezzanine area that serves as an open study above the living area.

First Floor Plan - The main level at the upper terrace consists of a large, open living, dining, kitchen area.

Basement Floor Plan - The basement area happens to be the entire phase I of this project.  A small living unit will become guest areas in future phases.  There is a large, three-bay shop/garage connected to this living unit via an underground connector.  There is a large exterior staircase that rises up and over this connector above.  The rear edge of all of these areas is nestled into the hillside.
