Baer House Addition - Lakeville, Connecticut (completed 2005) contractor: Rick McCue - Lakeville, Connecticut
The client for this project is a recently-retired Manhattan art dealer. She originally asked for a separate and detached guest structure for frequent visits from family and friends. However, the project was reconceived as a fully accessible, first floor master bedroom suite addition. This will allow the house to be used far longer and conveniently into retirement by alleviating the need to frequently climb stairs.
The master bedroom suite addition utilizes and extends the natural circulation paths of the existing house. (Roll over the above image to see before and after floor plans)
Study of addition. The addition is separated by a small court in order to maintain light and lake views from the existing house. The existing rear deck and overhang is repeated and extended in the addition.
(left) The interior finishes feature an 8' high "bead board" detail to add texture and character to the room. (right) Playful wallpaper contrast the sharp lines of the tilework.
The addition and main house face downhill towards Wononskopomuc lake.
(left) A side door for access to the bathroom/closet allows the client to come directly from lake swims to the bath. (right) The new deck and overhang repeat the existing from the main house.
